Alfred Water System Upgrades

Village of Alfred, NY

JM Davidson Engineering, D.P.C. (JMD) was subcontracted by CPL to assist with the design of a new water storage tank for the Village of Alfred.  The system currently has three existing water storage tanks located throughout the Village, servicing approximately 3,500 people in both the Village and Town of Alfred.  The system is also the primary source of water distribution for Alfred State College and Alfred University.

As part of a systemwide upgrade coordinated by CPL, JMD was tasked with the design and preparation of contract drawings and specifications for the replacement of one of the existing water storage tanks.  The existing storage tank will be kept online during construction.  The new storage tank is designed to have an increased capacity; thereby allowing for decommissioning of one of the older storage tanks across town.

The work being performed includes:

  • Researched water storage tank alternatives appropriate for the site conditions including pre-stressed concrete, post-tensioned concrete, and steel.
  • Coordinated with tank manufacturer for design details.
  • Prepared site drawings with proposed grading, drainage improvements, driveway and storage area improvements, fencing, and erosion and sediment control measures.
  • Prepared contract drawings with new water pipe connections including valves, meter, sampling locations, drains, and connections to the nearby booster station.
  • Coordinated with electrical contractor for necessary electrical and SCADA equipment.
  • Assisted CPL with construction support for shop drawing review for tank and site improvement items.
