RAILROADS

Railroads

JMD’s professionals are experienced in the design and construction of various railroad track and structures projects for Class I’s, Shortlines, Transit Agencies, and public-sector rail clients. We understand the unique environment involved with working around railroads and we hold the safety of our employees and clients paramount. JMD continually trains their employees for compliance with various railroad Roadway Worker Safety programs, in addition to FRA Bridge Worker and Fall Protection Training.

Our staff’s years of rail experience allow us to offer a wide range of services ranging from planning/feasibility studies, permitting, final design and procurement, to construction management and inspection.  Some of our services are described below.

  • Track Inspection and Condition Assessments
  • Track Alignments
  • Passenger Station Railroad Infrastructure
  • Industrial Lead / Spur Design
  • Yard Design
  • Railroad Bridge Inspection and Load Rating
  • Design-Build
  • Track Rehabilitation Planning and Design
  • Direct Fixation Track
  • Design Plans, Specifications, and Cost Estimate Preparation

The importance of maintaining rail operations is critical when coordinating any work that may have the potential to impact the railroad. Often designers and contractors associated with the construction of public works are unfamiliar with the unique requirements of working around active railroad tracks and the potential hazards associated with it. JMD is able to assist in this coordination and guide your project through the railroad approval processes to obtain the necessary agreements to start construction.

JMD can also provide guidance to contractors working on railroad property on the development of construction submittals that are in compliance with railroad requirements. Approval of these submittals from the railroad are typically required prior to any work beginning on railroad property.

Any project that involves altering railroad facilities or property or any project that may take place on, above, adjacent to, or have the potential to impact railroad property should be coordinated with the railroad ahead of time. These projects include:

  • Highway / Trail -Rail Grade Crossings
  • Bridges Over the Railroad
  • Bridges Carrying the Railroad
  • Design of Utility Crossings
  • Quiet Zones
  • Grade Separation Projects
